The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program, designed to address the state’s insurance crisis by providing grants to homeowners to install FORTIFIED Roofs, saw an overwhelming response from homeowners last month (September 2024). Nearly 12,000 people applied for $10,000 grants to reinforce their roofs, though only 600 grants were available. This surge in interest reflects growing concerns over rising insurance rates and the benefits of fortified roofs, which may offer homeowners significant discounts on home insurance. Despite doubling the available grants in the program’s fifth round, demand far outstripped supply, leaving many homeowners still seeking support.
State officials are now considering how to sustain and expand the program, which strengthens roofs to better withstand severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes. As part of broader efforts to build resilience, various state agencies reported on initiatives to secure federal funding and enhance disaster recovery measures. With an increasing emphasis on resilient building standards, state leaders are hopeful that fortified roofing requirements could eventually become part of Louisiana's building code.
While the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program has reroofed over 1,400 homes since its inception, there is still much to be done. Insurance officials believe that if at least 20% of homes in high-risk areas meet the hardened standards, insurers may view those regions as less risky, potentially lowering rates for all. Meanwhile, contractors and advocates are urging the state to expand its focus to include elevated homes in low-lying areas, many of which have yet to benefit from fortified roofs. Additional funding sources, including federal resiliency grants, are being pursued to keep the program going and protect more of Louisiana’s most vulnerable homes.
If you applied for the Fortify Home program and are not selected for the grant, our team at Fortifyy can help you find a vetted contractor in Louisiana and explore financing options to support FORTIFIED Roof replacement. With more than 10,000 applicants to the program, we're here to help you Fortifyy your roof today.
